BAM wins buildingSMART award at International Standards Summit in Korea

Bunnik, the Netherlands, 27 September 2016 - BAM’s use of BIM at the Felix Platter Hospital in Basel has received a 2016 buildingSMART award for ‘Operation & Maintenance using open technology’, which was presented at buildingSMART’s International Standards Summit on Jeju Island, Korea.




BuildingSMART is a world leader in driving transformation within the built environment through the creation and adoption of open, international standards and our award reflects the market leading nature of our whole life BIM approach, which spans an asset’s entire lifecycle and has been adopted on the Felix Platter Hospital project.
The implementation of BIM in our daily planning activities has led to far reaching changes and high expectations, while also raising many questions. All of which, need to be evaluated in relation to the numerous trades and types of work required on the project’, states Hospital Manager Jean-Luc Perrin. ‘As Felix Platter is a new, complex construction, all the core and support processes must be updated and modernised. This will give us a unique opportunity to create a ‘lean hospital’, by co-ordinating and combining the planning and construction of the building, with the process supporting technology, physical infrastructure and working environment. Throughout the implementation phase, the data that is created by each process will enable us to examine the advantages of using BIM to deliver an integrated planning approach and also during the operations phase. Unlike other schemes, our results will not be theoretical and will demonstrate what can be achieved on a ‘live’ project.

An international jury comprising Fernando Blanco (Spanish Chapter), Jan Karlshoej (Nordic Chapter), Susan Keenliside (Canadian Chapter), Birgitta Schock (Swiss Chapter), Deke Smith (US Chapter) and Benedict Wallbank (UK & Ireland Chapter) described BAM’s approach as ‘A total solution providing significant value to the entire industry. The Construction Information Management System (CIMS) and the Virtual Maintenance system (VMS) have been bi-directionally connected with a Computer Aided Facilities Management System (CAFM).’
