New in BIMcollab Zoom 9.0: Distance Checking – comprehensive and rule-based
BIMcollab Zoom 9.0 is available for download today! As a part of this new release, you can now perform Distance checks on elements within your models with BIMcollab Zoom.
Ensuring that potential conflicts are not only identified early but also reported and tracked until resolution helps you improve model quality and drive model-based collaboration. With our automated approach of reporting conflicts with Smart Issues, we aim to help engineers and designers deliver high-quality BIM models, reducing the need for costly rework.
In this feature blog, we’ll explain why Distance Checking is crucial for model quality, and how this strengthens your conflict management process within the BIMcollab ecosystem.
Catching clearance conflicts early
A critical challenge in BIM modeling is ensuring that all elements within a design are properly spaced to meet safety standards, operational requirements, and industry regulations. Without an effective way to check distances, modelers can miss elements that are too close, leading to safety risks, maintenance problems, and costly rework during construction.
Ensuring maintenance and operational efficiency
Let’s take the design of a hospital as an example. Medical gas lines and electrical systems need to be placed with sufficient clearance for safe installation and ongoing maintenance. If these systems are placed too close together, it can lead to safety risks and downtime. With effective distance checking, you can ensure that everything is spaced correctly, complies with building codes and regulations, and remains accessible for maintenance teams to service critical systems.
This is where Zoom’s new Distance Checking capabilities come into play. By automating Distance Checking with Zoom, you can spot and address distance conflicts in your 3D models early. This ensures that your buildings comply with building regulations, are maintenance-friendly, and cost-efficient.
A solution to comprehensive model checking
Zoom’s new Distance Checking feature is part of our goal to offer the best model-based collaboration platform with BIMcollab. With robust rule-based checking and model validation, designers can create more reliable BIM models.
“With our integrated and unique way of bringing model checking features to our users, we take their team’s productivity to the next level” said Erik Pijnenburg, CEO of KUBUS. “We are working on a platform that exceeds the capabilities of traditional model checking solutions, delivering powerful automated workflows that are simple and intuitive to use for managing BIM model quality “
What sets this apart? Our new Distance Checking feature is integrated with our existing Smart Issues functionality. Once clashes and clearance conflicts are identified, they can be reported as Smart Issues. When you receive a newer version of the model, Smart Issues automatically update themselves automatically to reflect the latest status of the conflict via background model-checking. Plus, they prevent duplicate reports when multiple users are checking the same model. This helps teams resolve conflicts faster by tracking them in real-time and avoiding redundant checks and reporting.
Within BIMcollab, all checking rules can be centrally set up and shared with the entire team. This ensures that project requirements are consistently applied across the entire project, including in Zoom, where distance checks are performed. It enables real-time validation of new model elements, ensuring compliance from the very start. This unified approach promotes a common understanding among all stakeholders, ensuring adherence to project standards at every stage of development.

Smarter tools for better BIM management
BIMcollab helps you identify spatial conflicts early in the design phase, ensuring safer, code-compliant buildings. By addressing issues upfront, it also prevents costly redesigns and reduces the risk of operational inefficiencies down the line. The combination of rule-based Distance Checking and the automation of Smart Issues creates a powerful solution for real-time issue tracking and resolution. This is a game-changer for BIM managers and coordinators looking for an efficient approach to bringing their BIM conflict resolution process to the next level.
