BIMcollab speeds up the process

This traditionally Excel-based exercise slowed down the process of identifying and communicating issues. BIMcollab was implemented to mitigate this issue, allowing many users to all be viewing and commenting on the design at the same time, whilst providing visibility of these issues to all users. ”My name is Lindsay Collier and I worked as a Digital Engineer for Laing O’Rourke as part of the MPT Joint Venture on the Trafford Park Line of Manchester Metrolink.

This is a Light Rail project in Manchester which MPT has been delivering for over 8 years. The Trafford Park Line is the latest line to be added, connecting to the network and extending through the Trafford Park industrial area to the Trafford Centre Shopping complex. The route involves the construction of 6 new stops, 5.5km of dual track and associated infrastructure.

“BIMcollab is a great tool for making sure everyone hasthe opportunity to identify and share issues” Lindsay Collier

”Whilst the team had been successfully working collaboratively with ‘Transport for Greater Manchester’ for over 8 years to deliver various phases and extensions to the network, the team did not want to stand still. They wished to implement BIM and leverage as much value from this opportunity as they could. As a part of this, it was crucial that the project’s federated models were at the heart of everything we did. One key item to add value was the linking of design issue identification and tracking to the models. This traditionally Excel-based exercise slowed down the process of identifying and communicating issues. BIMcollab was implemented to mitigate this issue, allowing many users to all be viewing and commenting on the design at the same time, whilst providing visibility of these issues to all users.”

“The live connection with Navisworks is a great feature”

BIMcollab is a great tool for making sure everyone has the opportunity to identify and share issues as they find them, especially when working with software that does not necessarily handle mass capturing and reporting of design issues linked to the model. It helps to reduce the waiting time before issues are shared and provides everyone from the designer, contractor to client visibility of the issues earlier and easier. The live connection with Navisworks is a great feature through the BCF Managers, and allows the capturing of issues to not be a separate task to the viewing of the model, which means raising issues is less of a time-consuming task.
